The Nike Alpha Mouthguard excels in providing a secure and comfortable fit, critical for high-impact sports. The key to its performance lies in the boil-and-bite customization. When correctly molded, the mouthguard creates a snug impression of your teeth, preventing it from shifting or falling out during intense activity like tackling in football, blocking in hockey, or grappling in martial arts. Its flexible material allows for natural jaw movement and speaking, which is often a challenge with rigid mouthguards. This flexibility also absorbs impact more effectively, distributing force across a larger area to protect your teeth and jaw. Users will find it less intrusive than generic guards, allowing for clearer communication with teammates and coaches, and less distraction from discomfort, ultimately helping you maintain focus on your game.
The boil-and-bite process is essential for achieving the optimal fit.
Boil Water: Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil.
Prepare: Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for about 30 seconds. Do NOT boil the mouthguard directly.
Submerge: Carefully place the mouthguard into the hot water using a slotted spoon. Leave it submerged for approximately 30-60 seconds (refer to specific packaging instructions as times may vary). The mouthguard should become pliable.
Cool Slightly: Remove the mouthguard from the hot water and quickly dip it into cool water for 1-2 seconds to make the outer surface comfortable to touch, but still soft.
Place and Mold: Position the mouthguard centrally over your upper teeth. Bite down firmly, closing your jaw, and simultaneously use your fingers to press the mouthguard firmly against your gums and teeth from the outside. Suck in to create a vacuum seal.
Hold: Hold this position for 20-30 seconds to allow the material to set to your unique dental impression.
Cool and Check: Remove the mouthguard and immediately place it in cold water for 30 seconds to set the mold permanently. Check the fit; it should feel snug and secure without requiring you to clench your jaw to keep it in place. If the fit is not ideal, you may carefully re-mold it by repeating the steps (do not re-mold more than 2-3 times to avoid material degradation).
This mouthguard is suitable for most contact and non-contact sports where oral protection is recommended or required, including but not limited to football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, and boxing. It is designed for adults and older youth. If you have braces or other dental appliances, consult your dentist before use to ensure proper fitting and avoid potential issues.
To maintain hygiene and prolong the life of your mouthguard:
Rinse After Each Use: Rinse thoroughly with cool water after every practice or game.
Clean Regularly: Gently scrub with a toothbrush and cool water, or a non-abrasive mouthguard cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals or very hot water, which can damage the material or alter the fit.
Dry Completely: Allow the mouthguard to air dry completely before storing to prevent bacterial growth.
Store Properly: Keep it in a ventilated case when not in use. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or extreme heat (e.g., in a hot car), as this can warp the material and compromise its fit.
