Prunus 'Taihaku', also known as the Great White Cherry Tree, originated in Japan and was once thought to be extinct. A single specimen was discovered and rescued, preserving this magnificent tree for modern gardens. This large and imposing tree is ideal for medium to large gardens, parklands, public spaces, and avenues. The Prunus 'Taihaku' produces clusters of large, single icy-white flowers, measuring almost 5cm across, which emerge from pink buds in spring. These blooms are larger than those found on other Cherry trees. Accompanying the flowers are purple-bronze leaves in spring, which transition to mid-green in summer, and then turn to a fiery display of vibrant yellow and orange in autumn before the leaves fall in winter. The tree has a vigorous, spreading, rounded habit, reaching heights of 7m and spreads of 8m over 20 years. It is fully hardy and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating most soil types except very wet or chalky conditions. It is also suitable for urban gardens due to its tolerance of pollution. For larger gardens, planting one or more Prunus 'Taihaku' trees will create a stunning focal point as your garden matures.
