The Chaenomeles 'Madame Butterfly' is a popular deciduous climbing shrub originating from Japan, known for its beautiful ornamental salmon pink and white flowers with yellow centers that bloom from late winter to early spring. It features thorny branches with glossy dark-green leaves from spring to autumn. This plant produces edible golden-yellow fruits in autumn. It thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and prefers a sunny position, though it can also grow in partial shade and becomes drought-tolerant once established. To maintain its shape, remove side-shoots after flowering down to 2-3 buds. Fertilization is generally not needed unless the leaves show paleness. The Japanese Quince is ideal for growing against a fence or wall, as a freestanding shrub, or trained over a trellis. It also serves well as hedging, attracting bees and butterflies with its distinctive flowers.
