In winter, its appealing bark colour is a major feature, complemented by delicate white flowers in spring. This hardy and low-maintenance tree is suitable for various garden sizes, serving as a beautiful focal point. It thrives in well-drained soil and requires regular watering. The tree typically grows up to 5m high, often developing a multi-stemmed, loose crown that becomes more asymmetrical with age. Its deciduous, elliptic leaves are yellow-green when young, maturing to dark green. Small, cupped white flowers appear in April to May, sometimes followed by rare red cherries in August. The glossy mahogany brown to copper-red bark peels off horizontally in thin strips, making it a spectacular specimen. While it prefers slightly dry to fresh, acidic to alkaline, well-drained sandy/loamy soils, it is generally undemanding and tolerates most garden soils except heavy ones. This tree thrives in full sun but also performs well in cooler locations. It is frost hardy and wind tolerant. Annual feeding with slow-release fertiliser in spring is recommended. The Prunus Serrula Tree is perfect for gardens and parks, developing into impressive specimens and looking stunning in high mixed bloom hedges.
