It is perfectly suited for tub culture and reaches its maximum height of two meters within one growing season. At the end of summer, it forms 20 cm long, cylindrical inflorescences that contain closely arranged, sweet-aromatic, lemon-yellow flowers with long, whisker-like threads. The orange fruits contain the fire-red seeds of the plant. The Red Ginger Lily has its natural habitat in Nepal, Pakistan and the eastern Himalayan region. The seeds can be propagated indoors all year round. Plant the seeds about 0.5 cm deep in moist seed compost and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the soil from drying out. Remember to drill some holes in the clear film and remove it completely every other day for about 2 hours. This prevents mold growth on your potting soil. Place the seed container in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 20° and 25° Celsius and keep the soil moist, but not wet. Germination usually takes two to four weeks. Keep your Red Ginger Lily in a warm and ideally sunny place. In summer, it can be kept outdoors and the first frosty temperatures in autumn cannot harm the plant. A slightly wind-protected place near a heat-storing wall would be best, as well as protected from rain in case of longer periods of rain, in order to protect the fine flowers. The thick, water-storing clotted roots provide the Red Ginger Lily with the energy to develop strong shoots. It needs a lot of water, especially during the growth phase and the flowering period – just avoid waterlogging. It also has a high nutrient requirement and it is recommended to give liquid fertilizer for tub plants every week from April to September. When cutting the shoots, the plant does not branch, but delays flowering. Therefore, only cut off dead and dry leaves. The Red Ginger Lily is perennial and is expected to flower after three years. For overwintering, it needs a frost-free and bright place with a temperature between 10° and 15° Celsius. Keep the soil constantly moist, but on a smaller scale, and fertilize only once a month. If the plant is kept in a cooler or darker place, it will retreat and the leaves may wilt. It is also possible to cut off the green, above-ground parts of the Red Ginger Lily and only keep the clotted roots frost-free in a box with sand for overwintering. It will sprout again in spring.
