These showy, petal-like structures sit atop slender stems above dense green clumps, creating a delicate, airy effect from summer into early autumn. It performs best in full sun to partial shade. Ample light encourages the most vigorous growth and helps maintain its compact form and abundant floral display, though it will tolerate some shade in warmer conditions. This plant thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and is ideal for planting in shallow water at the pond edge or in bog gardens. It requires fertile, humus-rich soil and does not tolerate drought. While not fully hardy in colder parts of the UK, it can be grown as a summer marginal in containers or lifted and protected over winter in frost-free conditions. Care involves regular watering to maintain moisture levels and occasional division to prevent overcrowding. Remove faded flower stems and any damaged foliage to keep the plant tidy. In colder areas, overwinter indoors or provide a thick mulch in milder regions to protect the roots from frost. Though not native to the UK, Dichromena colorata contributes visual interest and light texture to pond margins and wet planting schemes. Its open, airy flower heads offer some support to visiting insects, enhancing the diversity of garden habitats during the growing season.
