This deciduous tree graces the garden with dark green, rounded five-lobed leaves in spring and summer, often starting with a purple-red tint. In spring, it produces attractive yellow-green upright flowers. The Field Maple is characterized by its fissured bark with a corky texture, adding visual interest. It also produces winged seeds, commonly referred to as 'helicopter seeds,' which are a source of amusement for children. This tree thrives in fertile, moist, and well-drained soil and is very hardy, capable of growing in full sun or partial shade. It is resilient and can tolerate less-than-ideal conditions. With a rounded habit, it can reach heights of 9m and a spread of 7m over a 20-year period. Acer campestre is excellent for hedgerows and can be maintained at a compact size with regular pruning. Planting multiple trees in a row can effectively screen undesirable views or obscure boundary walls. It also serves as a striking specimen tree when planted individually, near garden features, picnic areas, or in rocky landscapes. The Acer campestre holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Notably, the trees lining the aisle at the wedding of William and Kate included a mix of English Field Maples and Hornbeam trees.
