Schizanthus, also known as Poor Man's Orchid, produces orchid-like flowers with contrasting eyes in shades of crimson, rose, amber, pink, and salmon. These showy annuals bloom from June to August, making them ideal for borders, containers, or as houseplants in conservatories. Plants thrive in a sheltered, sunny location with moist, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in trays of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place with an optimum temperature of 13-15°C. Surface sow and do not exclude light. Sow from March-April or August-September for overwintering. Germination typically takes 14-30 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, harden off, and plant out after the risk of frost has passed, spacing them 30cm apart. Expect plants to reach up to 40cm in height and 30cm in spread when fully established. Supplied as a packet of approximately 140 seeds, with growing and care instructions included.
