These charming perennials exhibit a vigorous growth habit, producing an abundance of large blooms in a captivating spectrum of colors, ranging from pure white and cream to vibrant yellow and deep crimson. They are perfectly suited for various garden settings, including patio pots, cottage gardens, alpine and rockery areas, low-maintenance landscapes, and woodland environments. Culinary enthusiasts will appreciate that certain parts of these flowers are edible. The sweet-tasting petals can be a delightful addition to salads or even pancakes, and can also be crystallized for decorative use on cakes. For sowing, aim for spring to mid-summer, using good seed compost. Scatter the seeds on the surface of the compost and gently press them down. Seal the container in a polythene bag or cover with glass, and place it in a shady location. Ensure light is not excluded, as it is beneficial for germination. Maintain a damp soil environment, but avoid waterlogging. Germination typically occurs within 10-30 days at temperatures between 15-18°C (60-65°F); higher temperatures may hinder germination. Once a significant number of seedlings have emerged, lightly sprinkle a tiny amount of sieved compost over the roots to help anchor them. Transplant the seedlings into 7.5cm (3”) pots when they are large enough to handle. Cultivate them in cool, moderately moist conditions, and in the autumn, plant them out approximately 23cm (9”) apart in good soil and a sunny spot where they are intended to flower.
