Unwins Onion Japanese Hi Keeper Seeds produce mild flavored onions with a hard yellow brown skin. Perfect for adding to a salad or cooking into one of your favorite dishes. If left out to dry, these onions will keep well in storage during the winter months. Stores well. Spring or Autumn sowing. Hardy variety. Sow: Mar to May, Sep. Harvest: Jun, Aug to Sep. Almost fill a seed tray or modules with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly and cover with a little more compost. Place in warmth (15–20 °C). Keep seedlings in a light position, but out of direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5 cm apart into trays of potting compost. Gradually accustom plants to outside containers for 2–3 weeks before planting out to their cropping positions. Space plants 15 cm apart with 30 cm between rows. Sow seeds thinly in a pre-watered shallow row, lightly covering with a little soil. Keep moist in dry spells. Thin seedlings to 15 cm apart to allow full development of the bulbs. Lift onions and spread out to dry on a clean surface in a well-ventilated garage or shed before storing for winter use.
