It thrives as a carefree container plant, enjoying outdoor settings in summer. While it can grow tall in a large pot, its growth is slower and more bushy. The oval-shaped leaves have a white-gray underside, producing a silvery shimmer. In summer, the Olea europaea blooms with yellow-white flower panicles, later bearing fleshy stone fruits that start green and turn black when ripe. Natural Location: The Olea europaea has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region since the 4th millennium BC. Cultivation: Seed propagation is possible indoors year-round. To enhance germination, lightly roughen the hard seeds with a soft file or sandpaper and soak them in warm water for a day. Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep in moist potting compost, cover with a bit of compost, and cover the seed container with clear film to maintain moisture. Remember to create holes in the film and remove it for about 2 hours every other day to prevent mold. Place the seed container in a bright, warm spot between 25°C and 30°C and keep the soil moist, not wet. Germination typically takes four to twelve weeks. Location: Your olive tree can be kept indoors year-round in a place with sufficient sunlight. Ideally, the Common Olive enjoys being outdoors in the garden or on your balcony during the summer. Care: Ensure the soil is always moist. Waterlogging damages the roots, but too dry conditions cause the tree to shed leaves. Fertilize container plants every two weeks during the growing season from April to mid-September. Repotting with standard soil is best done in spring, only necessary every five years for older plants due to slow growth. Prune the tree occasionally to cultivate a beautiful and bushy plant. Winter: Although the Common Olive can withstand frost down to -10° Celsius with protection, it is best kept indoors in a bright location with temperatures between 5° and 10° Celsius. If necessary, you can also bring your plant to the basement for hibernation, but it will shed its leaves and need to be pruned to sprout again the following spring.
