Avoca Caustic Pencils are effective for the removal of warts, verrucas, and excess tissue by chemically destroying the surface layers. Its performance relies on precise application and adherence to the recommended treatment schedule.
The active ingredient, silver nitrate, reacts with the tissue to destroy it. This process causes the treated area to darken and gradually shed the affected tissue.
Gather Supplies: You will need a single drop of clean water (not saline or water with salt), a clean non-absorbent surface (like an upturned glass or steel cup), petroleum jelly, a paper tissue, and newspaper or similar to protect your work surface from stains.
Prepare the Pencil: Put a single drop of clean water on the non-absorbent surface. Dip the tip of the Avoca pencil into this water. Gently move the tip in the water for approximately 20 seconds (or one minute as per patient leaflet for initial wetting). The tip will now be coated with water containing silver nitrate.
Protect Healthy Skin: Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the healthy skin surrounding the wart, verruca, or excess tissue you intend to treat. This acts as a barrier against the caustic silver nitrate.
Apply to Affected Area: Use the moistened tip of the pencil to carefully transfer the silver nitrate solution to the surface of the area to be treated. Ensure the entire area is covered. Do not rub the tip on the area or apply pressure.
Allow to Dry: Let the treated area dry completely before it comes into contact with any other surface. The treated area will begin to stain black shortly after application.
Clean Up: Using a paper tissue, gently dry the tip of the pencil and any remaining water drop on the non-absorbent surface. Dispose of the tissue safely.
Post-Treatment: After 24 hours, the black surface of the treated area should be filed away with a coarse nail buffer or fine emery board. The remaining wart/verruca should be treated again according to the schedule.
For Warts: Apply once daily for 3 days.
For Verrucas: Apply once daily for 6 days.
If symptoms persist or do not improve after these durations, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
