Full details

Rhubarb 'Glaskin's Perpetual' is an excellent variety for tarts, pies, jams, and wines. It produces large, juicy, and tasty stems that can be harvested late into the season due to its low oxalic acid content. If started indoors in late winter, you can even achieve a light harvest in the following year, making it ideal for quick results. This is a hardy perennial that is easy to grow and maintain, often displaying varied stem colors. Sow Rhubarb seeds individually from March to April, planting them about 1.6mm (¼ inch) deep in good quality seed compost. For germination, place the seeds in a propagator with a temperature of 20-25°C (70-75°F) or seal the pots in a polythene bag until germination, which typically takes 21-40 days. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Once the seedlings appear, lower the temperature and then move them to a cold frame before planting them outdoors in late spring in a sunny, well-drained location. Prepare the soil beforehand by incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure and removing any weeds. Transplant the rhubarb carefully to avoid disturbing the roots, spacing each plant 1m (3ft) apart. During the first year after planting, refrain from harvesting the stems to allow the plant to establish properly. In spring, remove any emerging flower heads as they appear. From the second year onwards, stems can be harvested from April to June once the leaves have fully unfurled. To harvest, pull the stems from the base and twist them away from the crown.
