Its striking flowers can be up to 30 cm in size and make the Protea cynaroides the queen of the Protea plants. The flower heads are extremely durable and therefore perfect as cut flowers and for dried flower arrangements. The natural habitat of the Protea extends along the coast near the Cape of Good Hope to the mountainous regions with up to 3000 meters above sea level. It can also be found in Australia. Seed propagation indoors is possible all year round. In order to increase the germination capacity, you should first place the seeds in a bowl with lukewarm water for about 24 hours to prepare. Add a tablespoon of wood ash (e.g. from the charcoal grill) to 100 ml of water to simulate the Smoke Primer common in South Africa. Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep in moist potting soil and choose a pot with a minimum diameter of 12 cm so that the roots have enough space to develop well. Cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the soil from drying out, but do not forget to drill some holes in the clear film and remove it completely every other day for about 2 hours. This prevents the formation of mold on your potting soil. Place the seed container in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 20° and 25° Celsius during the day and a cooler night temperature. This change in temperature will further stimulate germination. Always keep the soil moist, but not wet. A little patience is required with germination, but within one to three months the first seedlings will emerge. You should avoid putting the sprouts in full sun until they develop the first pair of leaves. The Protea prefers sunny but not too hot locations with light humidity and constantly moderately moist soil, as in its natural habitat. It naturally often grows in windy areas and therefore likes a place with good air circulation, which also helps to prevent fungal infestation. The Protea is used to a rather nutrient-poor soil and also only needs a weekly dose of phosphate-free fertilizer for potted plants every two weeks during the flowering period. Guano or orchid fertilizer is also well suited. The Protea can easily be kept outdoors until mid-October, as it can withstand light frost down to -7° Celsius. For hibernation, it is better to keep it frost-free in a semi-shaded or sunny place at a temperature of around 10° Celsius and good air circulation. Keep the soil evenly moderately moist in winter.
