Each variety is fully hardy throughout the UK, resistant to pests and disease, low maintenance and completely reliable year after year. Plant all three together beneath trees or in a large container on a sheltered patio alongside hostas and heucheras for a layered woodland effect. Keep soil moist and humus-rich, and remove any tired fronds in late winter as fresh growth begins. You will receive one each of: Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum', known as the Painted Fern: Arching fronds in shimmering silver with rich burgundy-red veins threaded through each leaf. The colour palette shifts and evolves through the seasons, for a changing display that looks as though it has been hand-painted. Growing to around 40–45cm, it forms a neat, elegant, weed-suppressing clump. Dryopteris erythrosora, known as the Copper Shield Fern: Brand new fronds emerge each spring in a blaze of vivid copper-pink, before deepening to rich, glossy dark green by summer. Fully hardy and virtually indestructible. Polystichum munitum, known as the Western Sword Fern: Big, bold evergreen. Lustrous, dark green, sword-like fronds sweep upwards in a dramatic shuttlecock formation, staying lush, vibrant and fully evergreen throughout every single month of the year. Growing to around 90cm tall, this is a fern of genuine architectural presence. Supplied as a set of three established plants, one of each variety, in 2 litre pots.
