The peanut is actually not a nut - botanically speaking, it is a legume. The English name Peanut makes that somehow clear: pea and nut. Anyway, it's still pretty fun to cultivate your own little plantation. It is an annual plant that becomes herbaceous about 30 to 80 cm high and blooms self-pollinating between May and August. The base of the carpel bends after pollination and sinks the fruit into the soil, where the peanuts ripen between July and September. The best time for seed propagation is between January and October. To increase the germination capacity, you can put the seeds in warm water for about 12 hours. Then plant the seeds about 1 cm deep in moist potting compost, put some compost soil on top and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the soil from drying out. Place the seed vessel in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 20°C and 25°C and keep the soil moist, but not wet. Until germination it usually takes only a few days - but in some cases it can take up to three weeks. You can roast your peanuts and add salt to your liking in an oily frying pan, to get a better taste and to avoid a possible mold fungus.
