Allium Nigrum, also known as Allium Multibulbosum Nigrum, is an heirloom ornamental onion variety. It features narrow green leaves at the base and tall stems topped with semi-spherical umbels of numerous creamy white, star-shaped flowers with light green centers. These attractive blooms are highly appealing to gardeners and pollinators like birds, bees, and butterflies, bringing vibrant life to any garden. Ideal for planting in groups, at the back of beds, in borders, or in pots and containers, these bulbs also serve as beautiful cut flowers. The Allium genus encompasses a diverse range of cultivars, including familiar ones like leeks and onions, with flowering varieties commonly referred to as ornamental onions. Allium plants are hardy perennials that grow from bulbs. They produce flowerheads on long, leafless stems called scapes. Many Allium flowerheads are characterized by numerous small blooms, some with very petite petals creating a pom-pom effect, while others have larger blooms with larger petals, typically forming spherical or rounded shapes. Allium are hardy plants, tolerating cold weather down to zone 4. They thrive in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. Planting in the autumn before the ground freezes allows the roots to establish. These hardy growers adapt to most well-drained soil types and conditions and are drought-resistant, making them excellent for adding splashes of color to the garden. Plant bulbs at a depth of 2-4 times their diameter, typically between 10-15cm.
