Lathyrus tingitanus Royal Purple, the purple-flowered Tangier pea, is a vigorous climber smothered in rich purple flowers in summer, similar to sweet peas but with no scent. It will quickly climb to cover an arch or fence and the flowers are excellent for cutting. Purple-flowered 'Tangier Pea'. Vigorous climbing plant. Ideal for covering arches, trellises, and fences, easy to grow, and good for cutting. Lathyrus tingitanus 'Royal Purple' is a vigorous, scent-free climbing sweet pea that produces masses of rich purple flowers throughout summer. This annual reaches 1.5-2.5m, making it perfect for covering arches, trellises, fences or for cutting. Sow seeds indoors in Oct-Nov or late Jan-Apr; soften or lightly nick tough seed coats to aid germination and transplant hardened-off plugs into a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained, enriched soil about 25cm apart. Pinch tips at around 10cm to promote bushy growth, feed with a potassium-rich liquid fertiliser, tie plants to supports and dead-head spent blooms to prolong flowering and maintain plant health.
