Setup, Compatibility & Care

  1. Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors from March to July into well-prepared soil in full sun. Sow seeds thinly in drills 1cm (0.5") deep and 15cm (6") apart, then thin the seedlings to 30cm (12") apart.
  2. Indoor Sowing: You can also sow seeds at 20C (68F) on the surface of free-draining, damp seed compost. Cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite and place in a propagator or seal the container inside a polythene bag until germination. Do not exclude light.
  3. Transplanting: When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 5cm (2") apart. Gradually acclimatize dill plants to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting outdoors on well-drained soil in full sun after the last frost.
  4. Watering: Keep dill plants well watered, especially during dry periods. Insufficient watering can cause the plants to flower prematurely.
  5. Harvesting: Dill leaves can be harvested 6-8 weeks after sowing. For seed production, sow in spring.
