Its inflorescences are long-lasting cut flowers. The fire-red colored flowers with a yellow edge and a strong yellow throat usually appear from June onwards. With their six ruffled petals that curve strongly outwards, the flowers resemble a crown or a butterfly. The delicate shoots can become quite long in summer and need a climbing aid to hold on to. The Gloriosa rothschildiana has its natural habitat in Africa and is widespread in the tropics and subtropics. The seeds can be propagated indoors all year round. To increase germination, you should put the seeds in a bowl of lukewarm water for about 12 to 24 hours to prepare. Then plant the seeds about 1 cm deep in moist potting soil and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the soil from drying out. Do not forget to drill a few holes in the clear film and remove it completely for about 2 hours every other or third day. This way you avoid mold formation on your potting soil. Place the seed container in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 20° and 25° Celsius and keep the soil moist but not wet. After two to four weeks, the first seedlings will emerge. Water the seedlings of the Gloriosa carefully, as they tend to rot quickly and fall down. For a rich flowering, it is advisable to keep your plant in a bright and sheltered place. It even tolerates the strong sun around lunchtime. In the warm summer months, a sunny and sheltered spot outdoors is also possible. The plant is best cultivated in normal soil with a drainage layer of expanded clay on the bottom of the pot. Keep your Gloriosa evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging in the saucer. Especially on hot days, you can spray the plant with low-lime water and ensure high humidity. From May to the end of August, you should also give tub plants liquid fertilizer every three weeks. The best time to repot pots is in February or March after hibernation. In autumn, the Gloriosa begins to withdraw all the airy parts and dies. For overwintering, only the tubercle remains, for which you can put it in a pot with peat or potting soil and keep it in a light or dark and dry place at a temperature between 10° and 15°Celsius. When it starts to sprout in February/March, you can also increase the watering again.
