Dylon Hand Dye is designed to deliver reliable, vibrant colour to natural fabrics through a simple hand-dyeing process. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to permanently bond with fabric fibres when used correctly.
Before you begin, ensure your fabric is clean and damp. Wash it thoroughly to remove any sizing or finishes, then leave it damp. Gather your materials: the Dylon dye, 250g of ordinary salt, rubber gloves, a large bowl or stainless steel sink, and a measuring jug.
Prepare the Dye: Wearing rubber gloves, dissolve the entire contents of the 50g dye sachet in 500ml (approx. 2 cups) of warm water. Stir well until completely dissolved.
Prepare the Dye Bath: Fill a clean bowl or stainless steel sink with approximately 6 litres (about 1.5 gallons) of warm water, ensuring the temperature is around 40°C.
Add Salt: Stir in 250g (approximately 10 tablespoons) of ordinary salt into the warm water until dissolved. The salt helps the dye bond with the fabric.
Combine Dye and Bath: Pour the dissolved dye solution into the salt-water bath and stir thoroughly to ensure an even distribution of colour.
Submerge Fabric: Carefully submerge your damp fabric into the dye bath. Ensure it is fully immersed and there are no trapped air bubbles.
Stirring for Evenness: For the first 15 minutes, stir the fabric continuously. After this, continue to stir regularly for an additional 45 minutes. Consistent stirring is crucial for achieving an even, streak-free colour.
Rinsing: Once the dyeing time is complete, remove the fabric from the dye bath. Rinse the fabric under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess dye.
Washing & Drying: Wash the fabric in warm water with a mild detergent. Finally, dry the dyed item away from direct heat and sunlight to preserve the colour's vibrancy.
Fabric Weight: One 50g pack is designed for up to 250g of dry fabric to achieve the full shade. For larger amounts of fabric, the colour will be lighter. For very intense colour or heavier items, consider using two packs.
Original Fabric Colour: The final colour will be a combination of the dye colour and the original fabric colour. For example, dyeing a yellow fabric with Peony Pink might result in an orangey-pink shade. For true-to-pack colour, start with white or very light-coloured fabric.
Water Temperature: Maintaining the 40°C water temperature is important for optimal dye uptake. Use a thermometer if precision is desired.
Safety First: Always wear rubber gloves to protect your hands and prevent staining. Protect your work surfaces.
