Growing to around 70cm tall, its a manageable choice for gardens of any size, from compact plots to allotments. This variety produces double pods up to 10cm long, often carrying as many as 11 peas per pod. The pods form mainly on the upper half of the plants, making picking easier and quicker. Sweet, tender, and perfect for freezing, they are also worthy of exhibiting. Successional sowing in spring extends the cropping period, providing a generous supply of peas from July through September. With nitrogen-fixing roots that enrich the soil, Hurst Green Shaft is as beneficial for your plot as it is delicious on the plate. Pea 'Hurst Green Shaft' (Lathyrus oleraceus) is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner known for its excellent flavour, reliability and disease resistance. Plants grow to around 70cm and produce heavy crops of double pods up to 10cm long, often with as many as 11 peas per pod. Pods form mainly on the upper half of the plants for easier picking. Successional sowing from April to June gives a steady harvest from July to September, and the nitrogen-fixing roots help improve soil fertility. These sweet, tender peas freeze well and are also suitable for exhibiting.
