Perfect for providing early summer colour when little else is in bloom, they hark back to a more leisurely era. Easy to grow from seed, they will last for many years. Unwins Aquilegia McKana Long Spurred Hybrids Seeds are a columbine hardy perennial that are early to start flowering. They return year after year with beautiful contrasting exotic colours of reds, whites, yellows and purples. Aquilegia McKana are certainly elegant and dainty plants that will provide your garden with a mass of early colour in summer, when little else is blooming. They are particularly easy to grow from seed and will come back for many years. Prefers part shade Sow: February to July Flowering: May to July Sowing Indoors: Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a little more compost. Place in warmth (10–15°C) and keep moist. Growing On: Keep seedlings in a light position, shading from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5 cm apart into trays of potting compost or individually into 8 cm pots. Hardening Off / Planting Out: Gradually acclimatise seedlings to outdoor conditions over 2–3 weeks before planting from April onwards. Space plants 40 cm apart in a sunny or partly-shaded spot with moist, well-drained soil. Advice: Aquilegias tend to self-seed, so expect new plants to appear in following years.
