After a few years, inflorescences on long stems stand out from the canopy of dark green pinnate leaves. The spectacular flowers of the Spathodea campanulata open in batches, so each flower is constantly changing over a few weeks. Initially, the outer flower rings will open with orange and red and on the edges curled yellow-colored leaves. Each time the ray flowers wither after two days and the next batch of buds pushes forward. In this way, the flowering continues for many weeks. The unopened flower buds of the African Tulip Tree spill a fountain of water when pressed, and by doing so they attract bats in their natural habitat as pollinators. The natural habitat of the Spathodea campanulata is along the African Atlantic coast from Ghana to Angola and even further into Sudan and Uganda. Nowadays the African Tulip Tree is also being cultivated as a decorative plant outside of Africa and can even be found in South America. The fine seeds of the African Tulip Tree need no initial treatment and can just be spread on moist potting compost and covered with a thin layer of compost soil. Place the seed container in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 20°C and 25°C and keep the soil moist, but not wet. Generally, it takes two to three weeks until germination.
