This attractive and popular evergreen shrub has been expertly trained into a standard (lollipop) shape to provide a striking architectural and formal effect. Standard Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is compact and neat in shape and very low-maintenance, simply requiring a quick clip once a year to keep its neat rounded shape. This well-known and award-winning variety is reliable and very unfussy, thriving in sun or partial shade and virtually any soil type. The glossy evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, but it looks its best during spring and early summer when the young leaves emerge bright red. This standard tree can be grown in any garden, large or small. Display it in a large patio container, or two either side of a doorway or steps for symmetry. You can also grow it in a border among flowering plants to add structural contrast. Grow Photinia plants in a sunny or semi-shaded position, in any moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Photinia shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. If planting in containers, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Photinia requires only occasional attention.
