This stylish standard-stemmed form features a straight, sturdy trunk topped with a neat crown of leathery, aromatic leaves, offering year-round structure and colour to gardens, patios, or entranceways. Highly valued in the kitchen, the aromatic foliage can be harvested and used to add depth of flavour to soups, stews, and sauces. Its compact, upright habit makes it an excellent feature in containers or planted directly into borders. Bay trees thrive in full sun or partial shade and prefer fertile, well-drained soil. In colder areas, container-grown plants can be moved to a sheltered location or cold greenhouse over winter to avoid frost damage. Aftercare: Water regularly during dry periods, especially during the first 2–3 years. In spring, mulch around the base with well-rotted compost to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly in summer to maintain a compact, rounded shape. Damaged or frosted leaves can be trimmed in late spring.
