At midnight, the vanilla-flavored flowers usually reach their maximum size and will already have faded by dawn. The most important thing for the grower is, therefore, to seize the right night. The snake-like shape of Selenicereus grandiflorus with a diameter of about 2.5 cm requires climbing aids, as the shoots grow quite quickly and branch strongly. The larger and older the plant becomes, the more flowers it produces in succession. The Queen of the Night has its natural habitat in Mexico, the Caribbean and the southeastern USA. It naturally uses steep rock faces or tree branches as climbing aids for its long shoots, where its aerial roots can hold on. The seeds can be propagated indoors all year round. Sow the seeds on finely sieved potting soil or cactus soil, which contains about 25% sand and is moistened with a water vaporizer. For a light germinator, you do not need to put potting soil on top. Cover the seed container with transparent film to prevent the soil from drying out, but do not forget to make a few holes in the transparent film and remove it completely for about 2 hours every second or third day. This way you avoid mold formation on your potting soil. Place the seed container in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 20°C and 25°Celsius and keep the soil – preferably with a water sprayer – moist, but not wet. The first seedlings grow after one to two weeks. An ideal location would be a semi-shady place. Water the plant a little more than other cactus plants and ideally spray the plant on warm and sunny days. In summer, you can also take your Queen of the Night to a somewhat sheltered place outdoors, but only after a short acclimatization period of a few days. Water the plant once a week during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging in the pot and saucer, as this leads to root rot. From March to July, you should apply liquid fertilizer for cactus plants in low doses every three weeks. After a year, you can transplant the plant into ordinary cactus soil. Another repotting can be done in the spring every three to four years when the roots have penetrated the soil in the old pot. The Queen of the Night should overwinter in a rather bright place at a temperature between 8°C and 12°Celsius. Do not place it near a heater, as this would disturb the hibernation and ultimately also affect flowering next year. Water the plant only every three to four weeks in winter.
