It delivers months of vibrant colour and a soft, sugary scent, starting as early as February and lasting for over three months. Hardy and weather-tolerant, it thrives through winter rain and bad weather. Some parts of these flowers are edible, adding a decorative and creative touch to the kitchen. Sow from spring to autumn on the surface of moist, good quality seed compost and lightly firm down. Keep at 15–20°C (59–68°F) in a propagator or sealed bag. Light aids germination, which usually takes 14–21 days. Gradually acclimatise before transplanting into well-drained soil in baskets and containers in full sun or semi-shade, once all risk of frost has passed. Feed and water regularly, and deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering. Images shown are for guidance only and show the expected results of plants upon maturity.
