Full details

The undemanding and frost-hardy bergamot, with its aromatic lemon scent, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful medicinal plants. In a moderate climate, it brings a beautiful color to your midsummer garden from the end of June to September, when it shows its red-colored inflorescences. All parts of the plant, including the flowers, leaves and stems, smell pleasantly lemony-aromatic due to the high content of essential oils and thymol. The bergamot originally comes from North America and is mainly found in the damp forests of the eastern USA. It prefers a sunny location and can be taken outside in tub culture from mid-May. A loose, humus-rich soil that stores water well or a special soil for herbs would be the best option for cultivation. Water the plant abundantly during the growing season, but always let the substrate dry on the surface before watering again and avoid waterlogging. From spring to autumn you can give the bergamot liquid herb fertilizer every four weeks. In autumn, after flowering or in early spring, you can cut the plant back to a hand's width above the ground. If your plant grows too densely, you can also easily divide the bergamot. Plants outdoors should be cut back before the winter season. Watering and fertilizing is no longer necessary. However, plants in tubs are best overwintered in a cool and frost-free and either light or darker place.
