Its dark green ovate leaves adorn the branches year-round, with younger leaves often spiky like holly and mature foliage having smooth edges. In spring, yellow catkins appear in abundance. After wind pollination, female catkins develop into acorns, green initially, turning dark red-brown before falling; these are a favorite of squirrels. Holm Oak timber is incredibly hard and strong, historically used by Romans for agricultural tools and cart wheels. Today, it serves as long-lasting firewood. The Quercus ilex is highly tolerant of sea-salt spray, thriving in coastal or inland areas. It serves as an excellent windbreaker in coastal gardens and flourishes in full sun or partial shade. It also won the ‘Award of Garden Merit 2002’ from the Royal Horticultural Society. Quercus Ilex Tree (5-6ft) is an evergreen oak with attractive leaves that provide year-round visual interest. Ideal for urban landscapes and gardens, this tree is low maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. It supports wildlife habitats and biodiversity. Plant in well-drained soil, water regularly during the first year, and prune to shape as needed.
