Soil: dry to moist, neutral to acid soil. Rate of growth: average to fast-growing. Flowering period: June to August. Hardiness: fully hardy. A mound-forming, evergreen grass that's particularly versatile, as it thrives in both sun and light shade and the flowers persist well into autumn. Silvery, reddish-brown flower spikes appear from early to late summer above dense mounds of slender, arching, mid-green leaves. The feathery inflorescences of this elegant, ornamental grass mature to a soft golden yellow and shimmer like a golden cloud as it catches the light. Compact and easy-to-grow, it looks gorgeous spot-planted among perennials, in groups towards the front of a border, or in a rock garden. Garden care: Remove the faded flower-heads in late winter before new growth appears. If the foliage has also started to look tatty at that time of the year, then this too can be cut back hard. In warm areas the plant has a tendency to self-seed freely. Where this is the case remove unwanted seedlings as part of routine border maintenance. Wildlife Habitat: Ornamental grasses can offer valuable habitats for wildlife. Their dense foliage provides shelter for small animals and insects, while their seeds serve as a food source for birds. Planting a variety of grasses can help attract and support a diverse range of wildlife in your garden. Year-Round Interest: Many ornamental grasses offer visual interest across multiple seasons. They can provide lush greenery during the growing season, stunning inflorescences (flower spikes or plumes) in late summer and autumn, and interesting textures and movement in the winter landscape. Some varieties even have foliage that changes color with the seasons. Low Maintenance: Ornamental grasses are renowned for their low maintenance requirements. Once established, they often require less water, fewer fertilizers, and minimal care compared to other garden plants. This makes them ideal for gardeners looking for beautiful but easy-to-care-for garden additions. Originating from our Berkshire-based nursery, established in 2000, we take pride in cultivating UK-grown plants with unmatched quality and dedication. Our expertise and passion have consistently illuminated the show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show annually since our inception, earning us over 30 prestigious gold medals in recognition of our exceptional plant standards.
