The flat, smooth pods reach up to 27cm in length and are slow to develop seeds, resulting in tender, stringless beans full of flavour. Sow climbing bean seeds indoors from mid-April for transplanting later, or direct sow outdoors from late May to July. Keep in light for best results. Once seedlings are large enough, gradually acclimatise them before planting outdoors in rich, fertile, well-drained soil with full sun and protection from strong winds. For direct sowing outdoors, plant 2 seeds per station at 5cm (2") deep, spaced 23cm (9") apart in rows 60cm (24") apart or onto wigwam structures if space is limited. Harvest beans regularly while young for the best crops. Suitable for freezing. Cook climbing beans before eating to avoid discomfort.
