From spring through to the end of summer the tree has a dense covering of vivid green leaves similar to that of a maple. As autumn approaches Liquidambar appears to melt from top to bottom in molten shades of red, purple, orange and yellow – it really is quite a spectacle! Lime tolerant, it’s particularly useful in gardens with chalky soils. Unusual spiky berries form during the summer months providing additional interest. A fantastic specimen tree for growing in a wide space in a garden or at the edge of a woodland area. Plant Liquidambar trees into any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Although Liquidambar prefers a neutral to acid soil, it is lime-tolerant in chalky areas provided that it has sufficient depth of soil. For the best autumn colours, choose a position in full sun. Feed and water regularly until fully established. Liquidambar will require very little pruning, however, damaged or misplaced shoots may be pruned out in winter or early spring while the tree is dormant. Position: Full Sun/Partial Shade. Height: Up to 25m when fully established. Spread: Up to 12m when fully established. Supplied as 1 x Liquidambar styraciflua plant in a 9cm pot.
