A charming and unusual vine producing tiny fruits that look like miniature watermelons—crisp, tangy, and perfect for snacking, pickling, or tossing into salads. Easy to grow and highly productive, cucamelons are a talking point in any garden. Sow: Apr to May Harvest: Jul to Sep. Sowing Indoors: Level fill a module tray with seed compost, firming with the base of another tray. Water well. Sow seeds individually on edge, pushing 1–2 cm into the compost. Place in warmth (20–25 °C) and cover with cling film. Keep moist. Growing On: Remove cling film as soon as shoots appear. Keep seedlings in a light position, shaded from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant into 8 cm pots of potting compost. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 12–15 °C. Greenhouse Planting: Plant 50 cm apart into a greenhouse border, grow bags, or 30 cm diameter pots once a minimum temperature of 12 °C can be maintained. Water regularly, especially in hot weather, and use tomato food to promote fruiting. Train up a wire or cane and pinch out growing tips when plants reach the top of their support. Advice: Check plants frequently. Regular picking will encourage more fruits to form.
