This versatile tree can be used as a hedge or screen to conceal unsightly fences, or as a windbreak in exposed locations. For those interested in topiary, its dense foliage can be expertly shaped into geometric forms, ornamental designs, or even imaginative figures for a touch of whimsy. The tree boasts a conical growth habit, featuring lustrous, glossy dark green leaves that contrast beautifully with the distinct red hue of new shoots. In early summer, it produces fragrant clusters of creamy white flowers, which develop into red fruits that mature to a deep purple-black by autumn. For optimal growth, plant the Portugal Laurel in well-drained soil, ideally in full sun or partial shade. It is, however, remarkably tolerant and can also thrive in heavier shade and exposed conditions, making it a suitable choice for challenging garden environments. If left unpruned, the tree can reach a height of 10m and a spread of 8m over a 20-year period. To cultivate a dense hedge, space the trees 2 to 3m apart and prune them to your desired shape. The Prunus lusitanica ensures your garden remains vibrant and visually appealing, even during the cold winter months.
