When a battery is nearly empty, it charges at a constant current, and the charger CPU automatically adjusts the current to be lower than the battery can accept. Constant charging increases battery voltage slowly until it reaches a maximum, at which point the charger switches to constant voltage mode and reduces charging current. The charging stops when the battery is fully charged.
